An excellent way to find studies that investigate tACS is to search the official government database that contains both treatment clinical trials and basic science research studies. Try using the search term "transcranial alternating current stimulation".

Note to researchers: if you are currently running a tACS study and are recruiting participants, please contact us such that we can list your study.

Highlighted studies (currently enrolling):

GLAD 2 (UNC - Chapel Hill, NC) - Major Depressive Disorder

The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS) to reduce symptoms associated with major depressive disorder. The initial screening will be done remotely, and, if eligible, up to 5 sessions of tACS will be administered in-person.

Participants may qualify if they:
  • Are between the ages of 18 and 65 years old
  • Have a diagnosis of major depressive disorder
  • Participation includes up to 6 sessions at our Chapel Hill location, and transportation accommodations can be made if needed. Total compensation for completion of all study visits is $285.

More information about the study is available here. We also invite you to learn more about the Carolina Center for Neurostimulation, where this study is performed. You can learn more by contacting the study team here:

PEAK ALPHA (UNC- Chapel Hill, NC)- Peak Alpha Frequency

The purpose of this study is to investigate the stability of individual alpha frequency in both a controlled laboratory environment, and at home with low-cost mobile equipment. The initial screening will be done remotely, and, if eligible, up to two in-person EEG recording sessions and 4 weeks of daily, at-home EEG recording will be included.

Participants may qualify if they:
  • Are between the ages of 18 and 70 years old
  • Have no current diagnosis of a mental health condition
  • Have no current diagnosis of a neurological disorder
  • Have daily access to a smartphone with an existing data plan
  • Have a willingness to download and install an app on their personal smartphone
  • Are not taking any medication for a mental health condition or neurological illness
  • Participation includes two in-person EEG recording sessions at our Chapel Hill location and 4 weeks of daily, at-home EEG recording. Transportation accommodations can be made if needed. Total compensation for completion of all study visits and all at-home EEG recordings is $180.
